 In Thought
"In earlier years, I created very realistic, picture perfect floral designs using color pencil, pen and ink and acrylic paint. To adorn my home, I used strong, pure colors, collected African Masks and was attracted to the flavor and cultural richness of Louisiana and that of Mardi Gras. As I painted and studied, almost simultaneously, I discovered the bold flowers created by Georgia O’Keeffe and the rich African influenced paintings of Lois Mailou Jones. In O’Keeffe, I was inspired by her minute details of the flowers whose magnified view often times created floral abstractions with vibrant, almost riotous colors, and at other times colors were purely monochromatic. In Jones’ paintings, her colorful African Masks appeared almost in relief. The mask and intense colors are reflected in my textile designs. In painting and in textiles, women with expression and attitude as well as floras and landscapes are the Dreamers subject of much of my art. I enjoy creating in textiles because the use of a variety of fabrics of varying textures, lead the eye throughout the composition and at the same time, gives each piece a relief quality and a three dimensional effect. The bold colors of the sometimes whimsical textile and painted images not only appeal to the sense of sight, but also provide great appeal to the sense of touch. My large scale execution adds to the colorful drama of each work of art. Whether creating in textiles or in paint, the colors are bright and play off of each other to form an exciting dimensional quality; each piece of work creates its own mood and tells its own story.”
